January’s Program
Posted on January 16th, 2012
Needle Felting
January’s program will be part two of the art of needle felting, led by Chava Israel. In November, we began exploring needle felting techniques that can be used as surfaces for additional embellishment, either in 2 dimensions or 3. In January’s program, we will finish the felting process and embellishment techniques will be explored. Each participant chose to create either a flat (or low relief) piece or a 3-dimensional animal. 2 dimensional objects are based on the landscape form and incorporate more free form ideas and later embellishment than the 3 dimensional projects. The emphasis in the 3 dimensional pieces is on building and shaping the animal form. These, too can be embellished when finished.
We had the choice of a reindeer or giraffe in the 3 dimensional kits. Each kit contains a simple armature in the shape of the animal, the roving needed, and drawings that will help to guide you in the building, shaping and coloring of the animal. The different stages of building the animals will be on display for further reference.
2 dimensional kits contain landscape colored roving. Cookie cutters will be provided to create shapes – leaves, plants, animals or holidays motifs that can then be used to collage within the landscape. These can be worked flat or you may create a low relief effect that will produce interesting textures to embellish. There will be felted examples from to which you can refer for inspiration and ideas.
All kits include 2 felting needles and a felting pad. Kits are $5.00 each ($8.00 non members). Extra kits may be available at January’s meeting.

However, we would invite all members to join in to learn how to pad stitches, particularly the satin stitch, and practice some variations of the buttonhole stitch. Just bring a doodle cloth, small hoop, needle and some floss or pearle cotton. We will add a couple more stitches for the Mountmellick group. We will be starting to stitch at 7:00 p.m. sharp.
